Cry of denial

All I do is say I’m sorry,
Midwestern countenance
and a painful awareness
that I am inadequate
curdled into a barrage
of regrets, a reflex
that, often warranted,
is diluted by repetition. 
Maybe, eventually,
I’ll find something
that isn’t my fault, 
a chance to say boldly
that I do not apologize.
