Love Story

The man and the woman
stand at opposite ends
of the vast ocean. Briny wind
washes each of their faces
as they shield their eyes
and look out from the sand
of their own continents
over the choppy waves
hoping to align the beats
of their skipping hearts.
This is impossible. Yet
also this is what we ask
of love: to gently weave
its thin strands between us
as if we are anything less
than a vast blue murk
away from each other.
But even more astonishing
is that things float and fly
across this endless distance.
The satellites orbit overhead
and a thin strand of cable
under miles of dark water
carries his tentative words
as, standing there, he tries
to tell her what he means,
and, truly, she understands.
