As a teenager you stayed
in your room every evening
because what was the point

of all this absurd sadness
called living, and the beauty
and chaos of the songs

you screamed out to nothing
in harmony with your stereo
made, if not sense of it,

at least a kind of company
found at the end of the world,
the ironic pomp and grime,

strained voices smoothing
for a vulnerable confession
of an album’s acoustic end.

Now that you’re older, you have
skin in the shell game of life, 
despite the walls you built then

— you sold out, and of course
so did all the bands. But still
you listen sometimes for nostalgia,

or when you are gripped tight
by what you still sometimes feel
as an apocalyptic sadness.
