Daydream

I kissed the hole in the light
and said: Yes.
- Rebecca Lindenberg

Outside the window
the sky shrank, violet
clouds closer now
than ever, and we drank
them in, wishing
for a different past.
I held your wrist
as we stepped out
and tried to plummet,
but the air froze us
and your cheeks
ripened in the cold.
You were nervous,
and I asked you what
this could have been,
and we stood there,
frost-framed lips
and our blinking eyes
until night finally
fell, and so did we.
