Mountain Air
Your first time in Colorado
your breath vanishing like ice
in spring you felt unmoored
Vail’s cool breath parting
your tissue neck like water
falling out of love with sky
in the darkness something
stirred in you for the last time
and something died behind
your eyes as you watched
the sober moonlit street
for a sign like sirens thrusting
you toward your new abyss
a place so much better
than that one but lying
still so much the same.
