Surprise
And yet. In the midst
of your strange project
of self-pity, the wind
still grazes your face
in its perfect balance
with the thick warmth
of spring sun, your steps
feel effortless through
the unbroken green plain
of this natural world
that’s so much more alive
than your parched interior
graveyard, and the song
that sways into your ears
is old and young at once,
a dance you remember
and the one you can
almost believe is waiting
if you can just linger
here long enough, inhale
enough of this cool air
to survive on.
