Carsickness feeling

On the day of your long drive,
seventeen hours from Florida
to Ohio, you learn things
about what your body needs,
how your brain slowly fades,
filmic dissolve into pavement
where it pools in the crevices
of roads in need of mending.
You now understand fatigue
as a different reservoir
than sleep, a numbness
that can overtake you even
fully conscious. You find
that you still love the wheel
even amid the exhaustion — 
the tires’ boundless rotation
a flawless symmetry of form,
all at once a surge forward
and an oppressive repetition.
