At first a spun-off puzzle
piece among many others,
inexplicably he was more
than the ubiquitous bag
of snacks, the sad look
and sense of tragic history.
And so he had to return,
even after his death,
prequel after prequel
full of nods to the thing
we knew awaited him
in Tokyo. What more
could an actor ask
than this: to be
an inessential organ
that reveals itself
to be the heart?
