It’s not entirely without beauty
to shoulder someone else’s risk
for them, so that with no fear
the driver can turn the ignition
and emerge into the early spring
air, windows down, wind-tousled
hair waving. Maybe it can be
virtuous to allow a given human
to do something this wonderful
and to know that even if something
monstrous happens (the crash
or theft, the unforeseen hailstorm
pouring impossible objects down
from blackened skies), there is
hope. Surely it is possible for there
to be kindness here, amidst it all.
