It’s easy to declare
that the people
in these movies
are immortal, super
-human avatars
of thick muscle
and sheer bravado,
and this would
not be entirely
incorrect, except
that Paul Walker
is not here, and we
know as we watch
the cars and guns
and reckless speed
that this place
has been visited
by mortality, that
it’s impossible
to encounter this
art without taking
the beachside drive,
following the road
we know must split
apart eventually,
sweeping something
essential away
in its wake.
